The positive mood effects of sitting less
14-01-2016

Without a doubt you have come across messages flashing that sitting is a new health risk. Often the way to solve it seems to be exercise; go to the gym, walk or do any other workout for at least 30 minutes a day. But there is good news for those of you who are not the sporty type: exercise is not necessarily the solution for your bad sitting habits. Instead it’s time to just stand up!

To be good at something you need to train tenthousand hours. According to this rule many of us are sitting experts

Research by Hans Savelberg and colleagues at Maastricht University has shown that prolonged sitting can lead to severe health risks, such as heart and vascular disease and diabetes. By comparing the health of a group with sitting, standing or exercise habits they were able to conclude that standing and repeatedly walking is the best way to lower the health risks of sitting. Exercising 30 minutes a day does not suffice.

Solutions can be found in the variation of sitting and standing during the day. Incorporating standing desks in offices and schools can be a great benefit in this. At EDLAB we are working hard to make Maastricht University more healthy and dynamic too. Check out our Education That Moves You project to find out more!
