Develop the Traffic Livability Meter for South Limburg!
The Stichting Verkeersleefbaar Heuvelland (SVH) is dedicated to improving the quality of life in South Limburg by reducing traffic congestion and nuisance. Traffic-related disturbances such as noise, vibrations, and overcrowding, negatively impact residents’ daily well-being, while tourism and recreation constitute vital economic opportunities that rely heavily on road mobility.
Traffic livability is an emerging and largely unexplored dimension of road traffic, focusing on its unwanted effects on people and the environment. When does traffic become too busy? When does it turn into a source of disturbance? These questions are difficult to answer, as the concepts are diffuse and hard to measure. As a result, (local) governments face significant challenges in defining standards, assessing impacts, and setting priorities.
SVH believes that by fundamentally rethinking mobility, this challenge can be solved in a way that benefits residents, the environment, tourism, and day visitors alike. But this problem can only be tackled through an integrated, data-driven approach.
To address this efficiently, SVH aims to develop an innovative Traffic Livability Meter, combining hard data with residents’ experiences. The result? Insight into when traffic becomes excessive, who contributes to it, why it happens, and which intervention will be most (cost-) effective. By translating complex data into clear insights, we hope it will provide a powerful foundation for effective policymaking and sustainable mobility solutions.
As a PREMIUM student, you will join a multidisciplinary team to work on a concrete, socially relevant project. You will design a functional blueprint for the Livability Meter, investigate standards and stakeholder strategies, and deliver a prototype or dashboard that can be applied immediately.
Beyond research and design skills, you’ll have the chance to build an innovative tool that creates real impact for residents and policymakers. Your work will guide decision-making based on both facts and lived experiences, amplify the voice of the community, and contribute to a sustainable, livable South Limburg.
Can you step into the unknown and create something radically new? Do you have a green and social heart? Are you ready to use your talents to make a meaningful societal difference and help make the Heuvelland region more livable? Then this is your chance to take action!
