How can Maastricht become an even more bicycle-friendly city? One where cycling is both encouraged and well-organized? That is the challenge you will help tackle with Maastricht Bereikbaar and the #posifiets initiative.
#posifiets is a positive cycling movement that promotes smart, safe, and sustainable mobility in Maastricht and the wider Limburg region. Supported by local organizations, businesses, and residents, it works to make cycling not only attractive but also practical and well-managed. However, the growing number of bicycles in the city has brought a new challenge: unsafe and inconvenient bicycle parking, especially in busy areas like the Amorsplein.
This PREMIUM project invites you to take the findings of last year’s University College Maastricht report as a starting point and develop a concrete, feasible, and sustainable intervention to improve bicycle parking behaviour in Maastricht and reduce the nuisance caused by incorrectly parked bicycles. Your design should take into account the needs and perspectives of multiple stakeholders:
- Residents, who are frustrated by cluttered pavements and blocked pathways;
- Entrepreneurs, who need accessible shopfronts and safe pedestrian flows;
- People with disabilities, who often face obstructions in public spaces;
- The municipality and housing corporations, who share responsibility for maintenance, accessibility, and enforcement.
Your task is to develop a basic toolkit or concept for an intervention that can be adapted to different urban contexts; one that combines short-term “quick wins” with long-term, sustainable strategies. The goal is to create a balanced, inclusive, and realistic solution that supports positive behavioural change while maintaining the city’s vibrant atmosphere.
