Redesign UM’s learning spaces to enhance student wellbeing, inclusivity, and study effectiveness through innovative branding and visual communication.

The Project

The Project

Design the Future of UM’s Learning Spaces

The Universiteitsbibliotheek (UB) is more than just a place to study—it is the heart of the Maastricht University community. Together with MH Roadstyling, a creative production company specializing in visual communication and branding, we are reimagining our Learning Spaces to better support students’ academic and personal needs.

Our challenge: how can we create study environments that not only improve concentration and learning outcomes, but also promote wellbeing, inclusivity, and a sense of belonging? Beyond furniture and layout, we aim to explore how branding, signing, wayfinding, and visual identity can shape the student experience, making them feel welcome, safe, and connected.

This PREMIUM project invites students to combine research, creativity, and user-centered design. You will explore scientific insights on effective studying, motivation, and wellbeing, and translate these into tangible concepts for our Learning Spaces. Your work will focus on the Inner City Library but has the potential to impact all UB locations.

Students will develop:

  • Branding and visual identity concepts that strengthen the atmosphere of the library
  • Design scenarios for signage, wayfinding, and visual decoration
  • Inclusive and wellbeing-oriented interventions that support effective study
  • Recommendations aligned with UM’s educational and research policy

Your insights will directly inform our vision for the future University Library. By co-creating with the UM community, you will help ensure that the learning environment supports participation, co-ownership, and a strong sense of community. The project outcomes will guide real-world implementations and could shape how future students study, relax, and connect across campus.

Joining this project means contributing to innovative, student-centered spaces that combine functionality with inspiration. You will gain hands-on experience in research, design, and stakeholder engagement while leaving a tangible mark on the future of UM’s academic environment.

Do you want to help design a library where students don’t just study, but truly flourish? Join us and be part of shaping the next generation of Learning Spaces at Maastricht University.

University Library (UB)
The UB is a partner in research and education at Maastricht University (UM) and supports knowledge development and dissemination within the UM community.
The main target groups of the UB are researchers, lecturers, and students of the UM (with the focus on students for this project). The University Library is responsible for acquiring and making accessible scientific information sources (to a large extent digital) (journals, e-books, data files, streaming videos), the digital and physical learning environment of UM, information skills training and e-learning support, research data management (RDM), and other research support.
An important part of the library consists of providing learning spaces. Learning spaces where the entire UM-community feels welcome and at home. These spaces are an important part of the face of the UM as a whole.
