CPD: Online workshop on Groupwork

Training overview

Groupwork can be a valuable experience for students, helping them to gain new skills and learn from each other.  For teaching staff however, it can be challenging to keep track of what is happening and facilitate the process in the best way. This is even more true when groupwork is conducted partially or wholly online or remotely from the supervisor.

In 2019 with input from experts from all UM faculties, EDLAB produced a guide to “Assessing the “I” in groupwork”.  This provides practical advice and examples from around UM on how to best prepare, facilitate and assess the groupwork process.  This has an extra focus on getting the most out of the individuals and offers different points for consideration in setting up your groups and assessing the contributions and outputs.

In this online workshop, Jonathan van Tilburg will talk you through the important elements that need consideration when using groupwork and the various assessment tools you could adopt.  It will be an open setting where we can share experiences and take a more efficient and considered approach to groupwork going forward.

About the trainer

Jonathan van Tilburg is a Senior Lecturer of (molecular) biology for multiple programs at Maastricht University.  He sees groupwork as a rich learning experience for his students, in this way helping them to improve their collaborative competencies. One of the challenges is to keep track of these developments and assess the way the students are doing in a group. For example, what are the individual contributions to the project or groupwork assignment. Since 2010 Jonathan has been using groupwork/projects in his courses and uses various tools to assess the processes going on.

Please note that this activity is specifically for UM teaching staff with a UTQ and a teaching load of more than 160 hours per year.
