However, more often than not, validity and reliability are the most common criteria that are addressed in assessment evaluation. Although these two criteria dominate the discourse about the quality of assessment, in this session we will discuss their value in practice and will even start redefining assessment quality. Several frameworks for assessment quality (all with specific strengths and weaknesses) will be discussed. We will also make a direct link to the new UM vision on assessment that focuses on creating meaningful assessment that promotes learning through feedback. We will conclude by identifying how you can apply what you have learnt to your own assessment practices.

Target group and CPD investment

This session is open to all teaching staff who have completed their BKO/UTQ and are involved in designing assessment activities for students (for example, course coordinators). The workshop itself will last four hours and in order to participate you are expected to invest around an hour in preparing. The total formal investment in this CPD activity is therefore equivalent to (at least) 5 hours (depending how long your preparation takes). You can take your CPD further by making a plan to try out what you have learnt during this session in your own courses and this too may count towards your CPD investment.

Preparation

During the session about the quality of assessment we will focus on different levels of assessment, for example, the quality of single assessment instruments and assessment activities across an entire course or even a study programme.

In preparation on this session, we would like to ask you to think about how you would define quality assessment. Specifically:

1) What do you think makes a single instrument a good assessment instrument?

2) What do you think assessment across a degree programme should look like? What aspects should be covered?

Additionally, it would be helpful to think of concrete examples of strengths (good practices) and weaknesses (problems) you have noticed or experienced in your UM experiences to date. We hope you will be willing to share or reflect on some of these experience with the group.

About the facilitators

Joost Dijkstra is Head of the Cluster Educational Development and Policy at FASoS.
