Interpersonal power dynamics in the classroom

Interpersonal power dynamics in the classroom

Monday 14 April  13.30-16.30

Classroom interactions are shaped by subtle power dynamics – between students, and between students and their lecturers or tutors. Understanding these dynamics is key to effective classroom management.

In this interactive workshop, we explore how educators can recognise, work with, and influence these dynamics positively using insights from Leary’s Rose and Daniel Ofman’s Core Quadrants.

You’ll gain practical strategies to:

  • Address power imbalances in discussions, especially on intercultural or sensitive topics
  • Respond effectively to low student motivation with behaviour-based approaches
  • Balance authority and approachability to create a respectful and inclusive learning environment

This workshop will be led by Laurence van der Vuurst of the Downsideup Academy. With over 15 years of experience in training and guiding teams across different settings and topics, he brings valuable expertise in group dynamics and effective communication.
