Let’s talk about guiding students with ADHD and/or Autism
Embracing Neurodiversity at UM: A Journey towards Inclusive Support for Students with Autism and ADHD
Are you a staff member in a one-on-one student guidance role and eager to deepen your understanding of the unique needs each student brings into the academic environment?
This session focuses on evolving strategies to support students with ADHD and Autism (a subset of our neurodivergent student population), guiding you through the often-unseen challenges they encounter. With immersive simulation, you will step into the neurodivergent experience, complemented by testimonials from neurodivergent UM students that shed light on shared and unique struggles. Together, we will discuss the complexities of labels, the importance of diverse perspectives, and the impact of compassionate listening.
In just one hour, you will gain insights on how small shifts in approach can foster stronger, more empathetic connections, empowering neurodivergent students to feel heard and supported. Expect to leave with some food for thought, fresh perspectives and inspiration for creating a more inclusive environment where every (neurodivergent) student feels valued.
This activity may count towards your Continuing Professional Development (CPD) if relevant to your situation.
Please note that while we appreciate the involvement of staff members with ADHD and Autism, it is important to clarify that this session is dedicated to supporting students. We will not be discussing staff support or self-advocacy strategies during this session.
This session is relevant for:
- Student/study advisers, mentors, academic advisers, career counsellors, and others who are involved in a one-on-one student guidance role.
About the trainers:
Gesa Lange (left) and Eva Ipektzidou (right) work as student counsellors at UCM and SBE respectively. They are part of the project team Embracing Neurodiversity: Let’s talk about ADHD and Autism funded by a UM Diversity & Inclusivity Grant in 2022. Over the last year, they have gained in-depth knowledge about Autism and ADHD from a neurodiversity perspective. They are committed to creating a safe and welcoming space at UM where students with ADHD and/or Autism can voice their needs, get suitable help, and feel understood.
