Digital exams: How to Translate your Exam from Paper to PC

CPD Workshop: Digital exams – How to Translate your Exam from Paper to PC

Description
During the COVID-19 pandemic most assessments were necessarily transferred to computer-based formats. However nowadays, while exams have returned to the campus, digital exams remain by far the most used assessment format. And not surprising, as the benefits are evident: automatic grading, more flexibility, and most of all: a range of question types that can provide a more challenging and realistic assessment.

In this interactive workshop Tineke de Beaumont and Johan Renes will demonstrate why and how you should translate your paper-based exam to a CBA exam.

The first part of the workshop addresses why CBA may benefit your assessments. Johan will present his recent research results on the benefits of a multiple choice exam (MCQ-CBA) as compared to an exam that uses different question types (Proxy-CBA), within TestVision. Two different computer-based assessment formats (CBA) will be presented, a CBA with only multiple choice questions (MCQ-CBA) and a CBA with alternative item formats (Proxy-CBA). Both formats have been generated with Testvision.

The second part is the practical part of the workshop and addresses the question how to construct a CBA exam within Testvision. Tineke will show you what question types are available in TestVision, and how you can use them effectively. We will show you the benefits and limitations of each question type. After that you will get to work on translating your own exam questions to digital question types.

Note: Please bring a laptop so you can work in TestVision during the workshop.

Intended learning outcomes

In this workshop you will learn:

  • About the differences between a paper-based and digital exam;
  • What factors to take into account when translating your paper exam to the digital medium;
  • How using different question types can enrich your assessment;
  • How to use the different question types that TestVision has to offer effectively.
