Assessing the ‘I’ in Groupwork

Groupwork can be a rich learning experience for students in PBL, helping them to develop new skills and improve their group performance through related assessments and feedback. For teaching staff however, it often remains a challenge both to keep track of what is happening in a group and how to facilitate the process in the best way. For example, are you always aware of everyone’s role and contribution to the group, what should you do when students do not equally contribute (so-called free-riding) and how can you take this into consideration in the assessment? With input from experts from all UM faculties, EDLAB has developed a guide on how to construct and assess groupwork within the Maastricht University learning environment and how to monitor the individual contribution in groupwork specifically.

EDLunch Host: Walter Jansen, Coordinator Education Innovation

Since April 2015, I coordinate university-wide education innovation projects at EDLAB. Maastricht University practices problem-based learning (PBL) in its educational activities and EDLAB initiates general innovations for the PBL-system. We for example focus on themes such as self-regulated learning, global citizenship education, international classroom, groupwork assessment, constructive alignment and research skills education. We also organize community- and professionalization activities for teaching staff, such as teach-meets. Walter is particularly interested in the role of universities in Bildung or character development education.

This session for UM teaching staff is for free. It will take place at EDLAB, TAPX (Building X, Sint Hubertuslaan 12), room 0.016 and includes lunch.  The session will be given in English.  The session with questions usually lasts from 12:00 – 13:00h and for those interested in discussing or networking for longer there will be time until 13:30h.

If you have specific dietary requirements we should be aware of, please contact us by email.

In case of cancellation, please inform us as soon as possible because of catering arrangements.

EDLAB reserves the right to postpone this event should a minimum of 6 participants not be reached.
